"Picasso would have loved his face."
When one of the world’s prestigious art collections comes to the resort town of Queenstown, New Zealand, shy art student Sophy James is immediately drawn to the pieces on display – and to the massive, silent, sexy presence keeping watch over them. She’s completely fascinated and attracted by the striking planes and angles of his unusual face, and can’t resist sneaking out her pencil when he’s not looking.
Security consultant Mick Hollister is used to women looking at his ugly mug – but not with the genuine pleasure he sees in the face of the girl with the charcoal-smudged fingers and terrible skills at covert surveillance. A security breach brings the two into fast and furious collision, and an unlikely friendship begins to blossom. And an even more unlikely – and very reluctant – love.
Introvert Sophy is content with her independence and solitude. She’s never looked for a long-term relationship, and isn’t sure she wants one now. Mick, apparently born with a face that not even a mother could love, has given up all hope of having one.
They have nothing in common. They shouldn’t even like each other. And they can’t stay away from one another.

This was a great, romantic and surprisingly funny romance about a very introverted artist and big, take charge guy who has gotten more than his share of hard knocks but is very well balanced and totally swoon-worthy in the romance department.I enjoyed Sophy's internal thought processes and laughed out loud more than once over the things she thought and how she said them. Mick was just a total sweetheart but definitely not a beta Hero. He had class and charm and devotion to Sophy that was really, really nice to read about.
This book is such a refreshing change from the domineering, bully Alpha Male hero normally found in romance and the sweet, doormat heroine usually paired with the type. Both Sophy and Mick came across as real people, with real issues but so totally in love and gobsmacked with it, that the book was a pure joy to read and one I will definitely return to when I need a great HEA.

Artistic License edition by Elle Pierson Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
I really loved this story about a guy who thinks he's an ugly brute and a shy artist who sees him as beautiful inside and out. The setting in New Zealand was really wonderful too. But what made this story way more superior over other books I've read recently was the beautiful love story between the two, told in such a perfect pace and tone. I've loved Elle Pierson / Lucy Parker's books since 'Act Like It' and I believe this book was written in her early writing days. The tone was slightly different but there's still plenty of humor, witty dialogues, and most of all, romance.
Although the whole story took place in a matter of weeks, Mick and Sophie's interaction was intense from the beginning due to heartstopping (literally) first meeting. Their progress from first encounter, to friendship, and finally to love, was never rushed and happened naturally. They also never acted out of character, which I appreciated. What's more, there's no manufactured angst / made up drama in this book. Just straight up love story between two people.
I really, really, love this author's writing. And I hope she would write more books in her native NZ setting.
This is the first novel by Elle Pierson who I believe is also known as Lucy Parker, the name under which she has written Act Like It A Slow-Burn Romance and Pretty Face (London Celebrities) (both 5 star novels in my opinion). I recommend these novels, having read each of them twice so far, I enjoyed them so much.
While I loved this author’s other novels immediately, I stopped and started this one many times before I was able to get a foothold (at about chapter 6) and continue to the end. There were some light, fun and quirky laugh out loud moments, but sometimes the story jumped from one moment to another and I scrambled to keep up.
I really liked that this story was about a man who was unattractive to most people except the heroine, and that she could see his beauty within. I also liked that the heroine was timid, nervous and quiet. She showed pluck and courage when pushed. This novel was about likeable ordinary people. I don’t always have to read about blindingly attractive people who do extraordinary things. A dash of realism is refreshing.
When I recently discovered that this book was writing by Lucy Parker but under another penname, I really wanted to read it because I just love Lucy Parker’s books. And although this book was a little different then her Lucy Parker’s books, I still enjoyed it very much. One of the things that I liked very much in this story was that it wasn’t about a good looking man. No! On the contrary, his face was the complete opposite of beautiful. And after reading so many stories about handsome men it felt like a wind of fresh air to read a story about a man who wasn’t all handsome and hot.
Who would have ever thought that visiting an art collection could have such an impact on your life?!? Sophie James never could have predicted that. Not only did she meet a man there whose unusual face fascinated her artistic soul but then you also had the crazy man and herself being taken to the hospital because of a severe asthma attack. Sophie never thought that such a nice day out could go so wrong. And when the security consultant with the fascinating face comes to visit her in the hospital with her sketchbook filled with sketches of his face in it, Sophie doesn’t know how to act or what to do. For a shy and not so social girl, this is just too much.
Mick Hollister is used to being stared at, with an ugly face like him, it’s a daily occurrence but the way Sophie is staring at him?! That’s a new experience for him because she’s looking at him with fascination and delight. And when she asks him if he would like to model for her, he’s really shocked. Mick has no idea why he says yes to this girl but he does.
Slowly something is growing between Sophie and Mick, it’s a fragile friendship at first but slowly it grows into something more. But both aren’t used to long term relationships and both have their own scars on the inside. Is a relationship really worth it all? Isn’t it sometimes better to just live alone but safe from hurt? Soon, both will have to decide this for their own. Is love worth it all?
I really enjoyed this story. It had humor, a little bit of suspense, a shy girl with no social skills and a ‘normal’ looking guy. You got both POV’s in this story. There weren’t many sex scenes in this book but the story didn’t need that and I knew from experience that there aren’t many in the books of Lucy Parker’s either. One of things that I like about her stories is that the writer writes about friendship and about looking further than appearances. Because appearances can be very misleading and that certainly is the case here. I liked both characters very much and their friends too. It wasn’t all moon and sunshine but I liked that about this story.
I’m very happy that I decided to read this story.
